The non-profit organization Velt is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Association for Ecological Agriculture and Horticulture brought the principles of ecological cultivation to the attention of the general public. This birthday was also celebrated in the Velttuin De Heuvels in Stabroek.
Today, Flanders and the Netherlands have about 170 Velt groups, with more than a thousand volunteers and 22,500 members. To celebrate the anniversary, the departments of Brasschaat, Polder and Groene Driehoek joined forces. The Green Triangle includes the municipalities of Essen, Kalmthout and Wuustwezel.
For this occasion, the Velttuin welcomed dozens of interested parties. They were not only interested in the garden, but also in the many sales stands selling organic plants and ecological products. Erik Jongenelen is chairman of Velt Polder. “Our department is younger. It started in Stabroek in 1977 and ten years later the members started growing vegetables in an ecological way. In our eco garden you will find 25 plots of approximately 100 m². These are all cultivated by amateur gardeners with an eye and a heart for the environment and health. There is a farm flower garden, a herb garden, an apple orchard with 80 apple varieties, a frog pond and an insect hotel.” (evdw)
