Brussels is not the only major city with a figure on the low side. The ten European regions with the lowest number of cars per inhabitant include the metropolises Berlin (331) and Vienna (366).

Flemish Brabant also has the highest percentage of electric cars. In 2022, 2.5 percent of all passenger cars there would be electric. The Brussels Region is in second place with 1.5 percent. In all other provinces the share of electric vehicles is even lower, with the province of Luxembourg (0.4 percent) at the bottom.

Favorable tax regime

The figures date from 2022. In addition to Flemish Brabant, Limburg (540 passenger cars per thousand inhabitants) and Walloon Brabant (524.23) are also more “motorized” than other provinces.

The average in the European Union is 560 cars per inhabitants, with peaks mainly in Italy. According to Eurostat, differences are often linked to the economic situation, but specific circumstances may also play a role. For example, the statistics office points to the favorable tax regime in the Italian region Valle d’Aosta, which has 2,339 cars per thousand inhabitants.
