De Sutter agrees with the statement of shortening the full-time working week from 38 to 32 hours with full pay. She is not worried about how that will be paid for. “That is a process that will happen gradually. We are not going to switch from 38 to 32 hours tomorrow, but that could reduce over time. I think there is a war on talent going on,” says De Sutter. “There is a shortage on the labor market and that means that we actually need to get as many people as possible into that labor market, but in high-quality jobs. This means that people also have to persevere. The intention is that there is time to do other things, for example providing care to others.”
Alternative punishments must be possible
De Sutter does not agree with the statement that prison sentences must always be fully executed. “It does not mean that a prison sentence should not be carried out, but if it says ‘always carry out’, I think there are options for alternative punishments. For example, I am thinking of the ankle bracelet or other formulas such as community service and the like,” De Sutter clarifies her answer. “We have overcrowded prisons and people want to massively expand capacity, but that is not going to happen overnight. When I think of detention houses, there is always a lot of protest locally. So then I think it can be considered whether each punishment should actually be carried out in full.”
