A raging fire destroyed a house in the West Flemish village of Jonkershove on Friday morning, after which a suspect was arrested. This concerns the flakka user, who was released on parole after a fatal collision last year. The brother of the flakka user lived in the burned-out house.

On September 2 last year, KK (32) from Houthulst hit cyclist Herman Tanghe (62) on the Esenweg in Diksmuide. He drove 112 kilometers per hour in built-up areas. He first drove to the left of a roundabout, collided with a vehicle in front, rolled over several times and mowed down the cyclist during his somersault.

Herman, a father of four, died at the scene. K. turned out to be under the influence of the zombie drug flakka, tried to flee and hit people with an umbrella. (Read more below the photo)

“What particularly interested him was the preservation of his home and that others should not speak ill of him. He showed not an ounce of remorse. His regret at the hearing is not sincere. All this was a theater piece,” said the police judge, who sentenced K. to the maximum sentence of five years in prison on April 15. He also received a fine, an effective driving ban of five years and was banned from driving for life unless a doctor declares that he has overcome his addiction.

Door not quite shut

“The court leaves the door a tiny crack, in the hope that you will give something back to society,” the police judge said. “The imposed prison sentence and fine are half suspended under conditions. You will be given an absolute ban on alcohol and drugs and will have to be admitted to a residential institution when you are released. I hope that you can still repent in this way.” K. was recently released, partly because he had already served part of his prison sentence in pre-trial detention.

Fire at brother’s house

Last Friday morning, local residents stated that they had noticed K. at his brother’s burning house in Jonkershove. When the emergency services were contacted, there was an explosion and the house was already ablaze when the fire brigade arrived. (Read more below the photo)

K.’s brother turned out not to be at home. “He was at work,” the father explained during the extinguishing work. He runs a butcher’s shop a little further away in the village. It stated because of possible malicious intent the public prosecutor’s office of West Flanders appointed a fire expert. The laboratory also arrived on the scene to investigate and KK was arrested.

Investigating judge

“He has now been interrogated, but without a lawyer,” says his lawyer. “He can be brought before an investigating judge within 48 hours of his arrest.” The public prosecutor’s office confirms that a 32-year-old man was arrested for the house fire and that he will be brought before the investigating judge tomorrow – Saturday. The investigating judge will decide on his possible arrest.
