Three Hazards on the Belgian fields, it would have been something. A while ago there was speculation that Eden Hazard could play in the Jupiler Pro League, but according to the former Red Devil himself, that was never an option. Moreover, he said he didn’t want to do that anyway: “I didn’t feel like playing football anymore.”

It could have just been possible, three Brussels clubs in 1A, each with a Hazard. Kylian played for RWDM, Thorgan went to Anderlecht, so was it not an idea for eldest brother Eden to come and play for Union?

No, says Eden Hazard himself at VOO, which is recording a documentary series about his career. Although he had to laugh at the idea. “Me going to Union, that would have been something. Imagine, then we would already be champions,” he sneered lightly at Union, which seems to be losing the title for the third time in a row this season.

To be clear: a transfer to Union was not an option for Eden Hazard anyway. “There has been no contact with Union,” he makes clear. “I spoke to other people in Belgium and abroad, but I did not want to come back to live in Belgium.”

Belgium was therefore not an option, but Hazard did have doubts about playing football elsewhere for another three years. “I actually thought about stopping in America. I joked about it to Christian Benteke (the two are good friends, ed.)that we could play football together at Washington for another two years. Together with my buddy. He still scores a lot. That would have been easy, right? I give the crosses, he scores.”

But that step in his career did not happen again, after which Hazard hung up his boots. “It’s not just about football,” he says. “Moving has also put me off. And to be honest, I didn’t feel like playing football anymore. If I really wanted to continue, I would have left. But I felt like I didn’t need football anymore. Only playing to make money and then asking myself two or three weeks later: ‘Phew, why?’” he concludes.
