A serious traffic accident occurred along the Brugse Steenweg in Uitkerke on Wednesday afternoon. A driver became unwell and crashed into three other cars and an empty building. Two drivers were taken to hospital with injuries. “Their injuries are not life-threatening,” said Chief of Police Dimitry Van Damme.

The accident happened around 12.25 pm on the Brugse Steenweg, opposite the Colruyt department store. A man was driving in the direction of Blankenberge when his car suddenly started to sway. The car left the track and hit a hedge, then the vehicle also crashed into three other cars and an empty building. The driver finally came to a stop there. Bystanders immediately notified the emergency services. (Read more below the photo)

The police, two ambulances and the mosquito rushed to the scene. The driver who caused the accident was able to get out of his damaged vehicle himself, but appeared to be seriously disturbed. He ultimately blew the whistle and also tested negative for drugs. A medical check-up quickly provided clarity. “The man became unwell and lost control of the steering wheel. That’s how he went off the road,” said Dimitry Van Damme, chief of police at the local police. The result was real devastation: debris was scattered meters across the road surface. Ultimately, two injured people were taken to the AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges. Their condition would not be too bad. “Their injuries are not life-threatening,” said Chief Van Damme. In total, three of the four cars involved had to be towed: two of them were damaged beyond repair. The door of a third vehicle no longer closed.

Fire brigade also on site

The police still have to manage traffic on the Brugse Steenweg for quite some time. In the meantime, the necessary lifting works are being carried out. The fire brigade also arrived on site to clean the road surface and remove all debris. The track should be reopened during the afternoon.
