The second Brussels crematorium officially opened its doors at the Evere cemetery on Friday. The brand new crematorium was under construction for three years. The building, at the Bordet tram stop on the border with Flanders, was designed by the Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura and is located in greenery. “It should become a place of rare serenity, surrounded by light and nature and conducive to meditation,” it said.

To manage the flow of visitors, “a clear circulation” has been planned in the building, so that visitors do not have to retrace their steps and make the rounds from the reception area to the family room. There is also a private space reserved for mourners and close relatives of the deceased. The technical rooms and incinerators are located on the underground floor. (Read more below the photo)

The opening of the crematorium also relieves the pressure on the crematoria in Zemst and Uccle. This is much needed, as many Brussels residents from the Noordrand have to go to the crematorium in Zemst to say goodbye to a loved one and scatter the ashes.

Chairman of the board of directors of the Intercommunal for Cremation in Brussels Fabian Maingain (DéFI) notes that prices remain stable due to the public nature of the crematorium, in contrast to the prices of cremation houses in Flanders.
