--

In this article we look at the new euro coins recently introduced by a number of European countries, including Spain, Germany and Belgium. These coins are designed to honor and celebrate important national places and events and are typically sought after items for coin collectors.

Spain has this year two new euro coins released, each with a unique design that honors a special moment or location in the country. The first Spanish euro coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the National Police (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía). The design consists of the organization’s emblem, which symbolizes their commitment to the security of Spain. The emblem on the coin commemorates the years of efforts of the police to maintain peace and order in the country.

This year’s other Spanish euro coin honors the southern Spanish city Sevillethose three UNESCO World Heritage Sites houses. One of these locations, the iconic Patio de Doncellas (Patio of the Damsels) in the Real Alcázar, is depicted on the coin. With the new euro coin, Spaniards honor the richness of Seville’s cultural heritage and deepen their bond with a city that has played a crucial role in Spanish history.

In addition to the 10 euro commemorative coin, the Policía Nacional has also received a 2 euro coin for regular use in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Spanish National Police. This new two-euro coin is legal tender in all euro countries.

Belgium

In addition to Spain, Belgium also has this year a new two euro coin released, this time in honor of the European Union and its joint efforts. The Belgian 2 euro commemorative coin celebrates the 25th anniversary of cooperation within the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) of the EU. The design, created by artist Iris Bruijns, shows 27 swallows – one for each EU member state.

The choice of swallows is significant, as these birds are known for their habit of flying together after a leader. This symbolizes the unity and cooperation that the EU Member States strive for in their joint efforts.

Germany

Germany already has this year two commemorative coins released. A euro coin honors the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany and shows a scene from the Jasmund National Park. The design shows the park’s iconic chalk cliffs and beech forests. A walker can also be seen walking along the seaside promenade.

The second euro coin of this year is a tribute to the 175th anniversary of the Frankfurt Constitution. This was the first attempt to establish a national democratic constitution for Germany in March 1849. The coin shows representatives of the National Assembly entering St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt, with symbols such as the constitution, a quill pen, the German flag and three feminine allegories: Unity, Justice and Freedom.

Numismatists (coin collectors) attach great value to these euro coins because of their limited editions and unique designs. Some rare or early editions can fetch significant sums at auction or from dealers.

The annual launch of new designs offers collectors the opportunity to expand their collection and learn more about the history and culture of the various European countries participating in the euro coin series.
