Wijnegem

The Wijnegem Noordersluis is currently drained as part of a periodic overhaul. This produces almost unique images.

The Vlaamse Waterweg provides periodic inspections and maintenance of all structures in the canal heritage. “Here in Wijnegem, the segment exits of the lock are currently being completely overhauled,” says Liliane Stinissen of De Vlaamse Waterweg. “These ensure that water comes in and out of the lock. These have been removed and are currently being fully checked in our own technical studio in Mol and, if necessary, repaired, preserved and painted.

The fact that the Wijnegem lock is dry does not have to cause concern this time. During dry periods it sometimes happens that De Vlaamse Waterweg uses large pumps to return the water to the highest part of the canal to prevent the level from dropping too drastically.

The Wijnegem lock complex consists of two locks of 136 long and 16 meters wide and also one larger push-tower lock of 200 long and 24 meters. The drop on the Albert Canal here is 5.7 meters. (yeah)
