ANTWERP – Visitors and residents of the Left Bank received two new Velo stations, with a total of 72 additional places: at the Park and Ride, and at the Sint-Anna ferry service.

As of today, the Velo stations at the Park and Ride Linkeroever and the ferry will be opened, each with 36 places.

With this expansion, the city meets the changed mobility needs on the Left Bank.

The new Velo stations ensure a smooth connection from the Park and Ride to the Sint-Annaveer at Thonetlaan (Broeiweide), where the ferry crosses every twenty minutes to the Steenplein on the right bank.

Koen Kennis (N-VA), councilor for mobility: ‘Both the Park and Ride and the ferry stop are important mobility nodes, which we are also further expanding and connecting.’

‘The use of the Park and Ride Linkeroever is increasing month after month, and according to figures from the Maritime Services and Coastal Agency, almost 700,000 people took the Sint-Annaveer in 2023.’

‘This year there will already be more than 100,000 crossings. The nearest Velo station on Frederik van Eedenplein is also by far the busiest on the Left Bank. For this reason, the installation of Velo stations at both locations is a logical step.’

The 4,300 red and white city bicycles are very popular and make a major contribution to the modal shift in Antwerp, whereby by 2030 half of the number of trips in the Antwerp region will have to be made by public transport, bicycle, shared mobility or on foot. In 2023, Velo registered 180,000 bicycle movements on the Left Bank.

Last year, 6,556,821 rides were made with Velo and 61,086 annual subscriptions were sold.

The two new Velo stations on the Left Bank together account for 72 new places, bringing the new total to 9,849 places (slots) and 310 stations. (EM / Photo City of Antwerp)
