Leave it to a former top defender to assess the Red Devils’ defense. Against England it became clear that defense is still the problem. And yet Philippe Albert would not change anything for the European Championship.
Centrally, anyway, because that is where he would put the Vertonghen-Debast duo, despite the two Anderlecht defenders giving away quite a few chances. “Debast was present in the duels, made some interesting tackles or blocks,” says Albert RTBF.
He mainly saw positive things. “I thought he was calm in the build-up. In my opinion he scored points. Vertonghen had more difficulty, we know his qualities and flaws. The left side of the defense generally suffered.”
“Debast has done his job well. He has been very consistent this season, except against Kortrijk ten days ago. I think he is getting better and better. We have to take advantage of the automaticity between the two Anderlecht players.”
Things are clear for Albert. “We have to put together the best team and Debast is part of that. I think he deserves a starting place. Leicester, Faes’ team, is going through a more difficult period.”
“They are not assured of promotion when they were more than ten points ahead. Faes suspected that questions would be asked when they were relegated to the Championship.”
