ENGINEERINGNET.BE – The dire shortage of truck drivers is leading to more and more problems in the supply chain. In addition, the total saturation of the roads forces us to switch to other means of transport.

Johan Boonen, Strategic Supply Chain Expert at POM Limburg: “We have no choice but to focus more on the use of railways and inland shipping. With an expected increase in traffic volume of 40% by 2050, without drastic measures, our road network will simply become congested.”

To realize the ambition of a more efficient and sustainable logistics sector, POM Limburg is now entering into a partnership with Multimodaal.Vlaanderen, the VIL advisory body that wants to facilitate multimodal transport.

Deputy for Economy and chairman of POM Limburg Tom Vandeput: “With a view to a shift from road transport to rail and inland shipping, the collaboration with Multimodaal.Vlaanderen mainly focuses on joining forces to jointly approach Limburg companies and thus identify potential opportunities for identify and realize a modal shift.”

Filip Van Hulle, manager Multimodal.Vlaanderen: “With BCTN Beringen, Haven Genk and soon Port of Limburg as well as BCTN Lommel, the province of Limburg with its four open access terminals has all the assets to implement multimodal transport at the majority of its companies and this via rail transport and by inland shipping.”

The first step is now to identify Limburg companies that can organize their flow of goods multimodally.
