The police services are making progress in the investigation into the stabbing last Thursday in the Berkemus café in Noorderwijk (Herentals). A 21-year-old woman from Pelt in Limburg was arrested. The investigating judge confirmed her arrest.

The arrest dates back to Friday, but was only announced on Monday. The woman will appear before the council chamber in Turnhout on Tuesday morning with the accusation of attempted robbery and murder. “Her specific role or involvement in the facts is still being fully investigated,” says a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office.

One of the elements being investigated is whether the woman was also in Noorderwijk on Thursday. After the incident, two men of African origin stabbed their victim, a 35-year-old man, several times with a large knife. According to our information, the victim is still fighting for his life in the Antwerp University Hospital. The perpetrators may have been after a Rolex watch, but that has not been confirmed.

License plate recognition

The public prosecutor’s office cannot comment on how investigators tracked down the woman. It is clear that the police services had a clear description of the car in which the two suspects fled after the facts. That car, a rented vehicle, was quickly found in Antwerp with the help of smart cameras with license plate recognition. None of the occupants were to be seen. (mph)
