The match against Ireland had two standouts. One of them was Thomas Meunier who left a good impression.
Sels is undoubtedly one of the standouts for the Red Devils against Ireland. If he doesn’t stop the penalty, it might remain 1-0. But Thomas Meunier was also one of the better players for the Devils.
“At half-time I was very eager to come on,” the right back explained to Het Belang van Limburg, although he also had to add a striking confession. “I was exhausted after 20 minutes from all the walking, but I kept going.”
Meunier got the best, and also the only real chance the Red Devils had. “That attack was a good one, wasn’t it? So you see: if we bring quality, we can still be in front of the goal in three passes. I saw my kick fly in, but it lacked some power. Shame.”
Making it to European Championship selection is the goal
It was also striking that Meunier wore the captain’s armband. “I thought it was a sign of respect that I now received the bond from the national coach. I’m not a great leader. More like a soldier than a sergeant, but it was fun. I was also the oldest on the field then.”
Meunier is satisfied with his selection and is eager to go to the European Championship. He does not expect to be in the starting line-up against England.
“We shall see. In such a big stadium like Wembley it will be a completely different match with perhaps some different players such as Romelu. It remains to be seen what choices the national coach makes. My big goal is to make the European Championship selection in June, but I am not going to do scissors in training. The coach knows that I am 100 percent committed to playing that tournament.”
