Wommelgem

In a full HH Petrus en Pauluskerk in Wommelgem, former mayor Walter Van der Plaetsen was said goodbye on Saturday. The hearse with black horses made a symbolic stop in front of the town hall.

Walter Van der Plaetsen died last Sunday at the age of 83. He was mayor of Wommelgem for eighteen years, until 2012, and also chairman of Ternesse football club for thirty years.

The farewell service was led by priest Guy Mennen. His mayoral sash and a scarf from the Ternesse football club lay over the coffin.

Well-known liberal politicians had dropped out, such as former minister Dirk Van Mechelen, Koen Helsen and Luc Bungeneers.

There were also many representatives of Ternesse football club. After the church service, the coffin was taken away in a black hearse pulled by two black Frisian horses. There was a brief stop at the steps of the town hall.

Water Van Der Plaetsen was buried in the plot of honor at the Wommelgem cemetery.
