A disgruntled employee, bizarre experiments, and a poisonous murder: the story behind the scenes of the latest Netflix hit

Many viewers these days are immensely interested in the Netflix series ‘3 Body Problem’, but perhaps even more striking are the events behind the scenes of that production. Or as Chinese media describe it: the story of a disgruntled employee, bizarre experiments, and a poison murder.

3 Body Problem According to Netflix, it was viewed no less than 11 million times in four days. Impressive figures for a series about a Chinese astrophysicist who must mathematically avert an unspecified threat to humanity from the past.

“A story of deadly ambition”

But things were also dramatic behind the scenes, according to a reconstruction of the New York Times. Chinese media describe the case as “a story of deadly ambition and rivalry with a macabre edge”, “as bizarre as a Hollywood blockbuster”. Starring: Lin Qi, the 39-year-old billionaire behind the gaming company Yoozoo who bought the film rights to the book of the same name, and Xu Yao, an employee in his company.

Xu has worked at Yoozoo as a lawyer since 2017, more specifically in the department that, among other things, oversaw the rights of 3 Body Problem. However, much to his anger, the man was demoted. He then founded – according to his own words, inspired by the well-known television series Breaking bad – into a laboratory, where he used supplies he bought on the dark web experimented with all kinds of poisons on dogs, cats and other animals.

Poison murder

After he was satisfied with his experiments, he started poisoning his boss. “Between September and December 2020, Mr.
