British musician Chris Cross has died at the age of 71. Cross was best known as the bassist of Ultravox, and co-wrote their mega hit ‘Vienna’, among other things.

Cross – real name: Christopher Allen – died on March 25, but the news was only announced on Monday. “We worked together and played together, made music together and directed videos together,” singer Midge Ure writes in a tribute to his late bandmate. “We were friends from the start. Even after years of no contact, we clicked again as if it were yesterday. You were the glue that held the band together, you were the logic in the madness, and the madness in our lives. It was a pleasure to know you and to grow with you. We love and will miss you, old friend.”

Ultravox was a new wave band that was particularly successful in the 1980s. Their biggest hit was Viennawhich Cross also co-wrote.
