Former film producer Harvey Weinstein appeared again in court in New York on Wednesday. The hearing came after the highest court in New York ruled last week to overturn Weinstein’s 2020 conviction. It is now being considered whether the process should be repeated.

The now 72-year-old Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in March 2020 for multiple cases of sexual abuse, including rape. Dozens of women had made accusations against Weinstein, who was known as one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood before the scandal broke.

But the highest court in New York overturned that conviction last week. During his trial, women also testified about facts for which the former film producer had not been charged. According to the court, these were “blatant errors” that prevented a fair trial.

It is now being considered whether a new process should be introduced. In any case, Weinstein will not be released, because he was also sentenced to sixteen years in prison in 2023 for a rape case in California.

Weinstein was wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair. He was wearing a suit and was chained to the armrest of his wheelchair.

Weinstein’s conviction in 2020 was seen as a “historic event.” The revelations about Weinstein’s misconduct sparked the MeToo movement in 2017.
