Miranda: “Noëlla has suffered from shortness of breath and shortness of breath since she was little. The bigger she gets, the worse it seems to get. Sometimes she is so short of breath that it scares me to death. It’s terrible to see your child like this, gasping for breath. Sometimes we end up in such intense moments with her in the emergency room. It’s moments like these that hold my breath.”

“As a mother, I often feel so helpless, because I cannot take away the asthma. And I would like nothing more. Of course, she’s on a lot of medications, from prednisone to inhalers, and that helps. But it doesn’t cure asthma.

Moreover, the medications also have their side effects. Sometimes she really swells from the prednisone and gains weight quickly. And somehow it hurts my mother’s heart to see that such a little girl is already taking so many medications, but at the same time I am happy that it is helping her.”

What exactly happens during an asthma attack? ‘Asthma is an exaggerated reaction of our immune system. In asthma, the same immune system reacts so strongly that it provokes a strong reaction even to harmless substances such as pollen and dust mites. This causes the lungs to become permanently inflamed,” it says on the Lung Fund website.

Many factors play a role in the development of asthma. Heredity is one of them, but the environment in which children grow up also has a major influence on the development of asthma.

An invisible condition, in Miranda’s eyes. “I greatly misjudged the impact it had on your child and your family. I sometimes heard about others with asthma and thought: it’s just asthma. But now that my daughter herself has asthma, and you don’t see it in her appearance but it does mark her life, I really know what the impact of the disease is.

She tires so much more quickly than her peers, can handle less and of course has severe asthma attacks. She will have to learn to deal with the impact of asthma on her life and so will we as a family.”

“Despite everything, Noëlla has such a positive attitude, I am very proud of her. And I hope that in the future she will be able to do the same as her peers. It will take more time and energy, but seeing what she has already overcome, I hope she will see the whole world and change things for other children.”

Tuesday, May 7 is World Asthma Day. Collection will take place in the week of May 13 to 18. The proceeds are used to conduct research into the prevention of asthma in children. The Lung Fund is doing everything it can to make a medical breakthrough possible within ten years that will prevent asthma in a large proportion of children.
