Zoetermeer – Twice a year, an information evening about the transition is organized in the HagaZiekenhuis Zoetermeer. Additions to what is known, but also what you did not know about the transition, will be discussed during this information evening. Everyone is welcome.

The menopause and associated complaints seem to be a common knowledge. Nursing menopause consultant Sandra van der Wielen tells from experience that there are still women for whom this is unknown. “Our goal for the information evenings is that women are well informed and know where they can get help if necessary.”

Hormones

In addition to Sandra, a gynecologist and a pelvic physiotherapist from Impact physiotherapy & training will also speak. “My role that evening is to talk about typical and atypical complaints associated with menopause and what you should think about. I explain what estrogens do in a body. You have to make do with less or without for one third of your life, which can cause health risks. Health is very important in this and I will tell you what you can do about it.” The gynecologist explains the role of hormones including estrogens. “Hormone therapy can help, but there is still a negative feeling about it. This is often based on an older study that used other hormones,” Sandra explains. The pelvic physiotherapist talks about pelvic floor complaints (urinary loss) and osteoporosis (bone decalcification caused by the reduction of estrogens).

Severe complaints

In case of complaints, the first step is a visit to the doctor. Menopause is part of women’s lives and 80 percent experience complaints, a third of which are severe. The guideline for this was amended by general practitioners a year ago, so that the transition is removed from the taboo atmosphere and becomes open to discussion.

Complaints not recognized

The HagaZiekenhuis has a menopause clinic for which your GP can make a referral, but you can also contact an independently working menopause consultant (often reimbursed by supplementary insurance).

“It is also important for company doctors to be aware of menopausal complaints. Sometimes the complaints are not recognized and confused with a burnout,” says Sandra. “Menopause starts around the age of 45, but it is known that it can also start at a younger age. Then recognition is very important to arrive at the right treatment.”

Lifestyle

Lifestyle is also an important topic in this. Sufficient sleep, good nutrition, exercise, taking good care of yourself. “Many women experience stress trying to keep all the balls in the air. You have to find a good balance and do things that give you energy. Discuss it at home, at work and with each other. Just knowing what it is like helps you know how to deal with it.”

Information can be found on the website of the professional association VVOC, to which approximately 60 nursing menopause consultants are affiliated nationally. Videos on www.de.gynaecoloog.nl and there are of course books on this subject, whether or not written by a famous Dutch person.
