We have known Tom Waes (55) for many years as the man of great adventure. Father Wim also has a hand in this. The 84-year-old father of the TV maker recently went on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella with a friend. The duo wants to raise money for cancer research. My son joined us for three days.
“My dad (84) and his friend Hugo (75) go to Compostella. Together with my brother we walked for three wonderful days,” writes Tom Waes with some Instagram photos of the undoubtedly grueling journey. “Three days for us, 43 days for the two veterans. Hugo lost his son-in-law last year to aggressive brain tumors.”
The gentlemen are walking to raise money for scientific research into the disease. “Every euro helps… every little euro,” said the presenter.
Five years ago, father Wim also undertook the calvary to the Spanish pilgrimage site. Then he walked 800 kilometers on the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Piéd-de-Port to Santiago de Compostella in 38 days. Waes senior fulfilled a dream he had cherished all his life.

The normally quiet family man wanted to complete the challenge before he turned eighty. In the VRT programme A year from today the bright eighty-year-old came to presenter Cath Luyten to report on his courageous journey.
We will know in about a month’s time whether Wim Waes and his companion, now 75 years old, will make it to Compostella this time too. Anyone who wants to sponsor the cancer research that the duo is walking for can visit the KU Leuven website.
