GROENLO – All those interested in the Eighty Years’ War can go to the Groenlo Library on Wednesday evening, April 10 at 7:30 PM for a lecture by Godfried Nijs. Nijs is an expert in the field of the Eighty Years’ War and curator of the National Museum of the Eighty Years’ War in Groenlo. He is the author of the book ‘Grols gewin’, also the title of this lecture. Tickets for the lecture can be booked via www.oostachterhoek.nl.

For forty years, Lichtenvoorde resident Godfried Nijs has been passionately studying and describing the Eighty Years’ War around Groenlo and the surrounding area. He wrote the book ‘Grols Gewin’ about this, which was officially presented in December last year. When reading the book, the reader gets a good impression of the events in these turbulent times. The book was one of the nominees for the ‘Best Book Achterhoek and Liemers’ prize.

In ‘Grols Gewin’ a large part of the Eighty Years’ War is described, focusing on Grol and the area between Zutphen and Münster. Because whoever owned Grol, ‘won’, largely determined the events that took place in this region.

It became clear that Holland was committed to keeping the war beyond their own provincial borders. Condition for a Dutch ‘Golden Age’ in wartime. This succeeded in the first decades of the struggle. The remainder of the Eighty Years’ War was largely fought in our area for many years afterwards, with all the misery that entailed.

Old and new sources have been examined for ‘Grols Gewin’. This yielded new insights and discoveries that will be discussed in the lecture. The lecture is recommended for all those interested in Achterhoek history, but also for anyone who will work as an extra during the upcoming Battle of Grolle.
