Artist Willem Vos from Dieverbrug is once again popular in China. He has already had the opportunity to exhibit there and will travel to Southeast Asia again later this month. Eight of his works are in Beijing, one of which was inspired by a historical event in Drenthe.

Last year, Vos put his own spin on the ruthless village fire in Dwingeloo. In memory of the sea of flames in 1923, an exhibition was set up in the Siepel Church in the village. The artist painted a burning church, with a phoenix rising from the ashes over it. In mythology, the bird symbolizes rising and being reborn.

“The Chinese have selected it. They would like to see the painting,” Vos says in his studio about the selection. He would like to show the colored canvas today, if it were not for the fact that the showpiece is already on its way. “He has already flown to China,” Vos jokes.

A career as an artist did not seem destined for Vos. Four years ago he pulled the plug on his company and was just getting started. “I already did painting, but only during holidays. I didn’t get around to it in between.”

In New York, two years ago, Vos’ talent really came to light. Eight paintings have already ended up in China, six of which were sold. Now a new exodus follows.

Vos hopes that his Dwingelder painting will continue to be admired in China. “I would love that. A piece of advertising for Dwingel.”
