Alexander Blessin couldn’t cope with his emotions after the cup win. We had to wait for him for two hours and when he entered the press room, he immediately warned us: “Don’t expect any intelligent statements from me… Nothing is going to turn out well.”
That went very well. Blessin’s emotions were beautiful to behold. “Last season you lost the title in Antwerp in the last ten minutes. Those last ten minutes now… And that final whistle… It just happens to you at that moment,” he began.
Having his family there made it even better. Especially his wife Charlotte, who suffered a spinal cord infarction last year and is partially paralyzed. “It means everything that she was there,” Blessin said with tears of joy at the edge of his eyes. “It doesn’t happen often that my wife can come.”
Going to party? Two beers and I’m dancing on the table
“I was thinking: should I let her come to the stadium, should I not let her come… But she deserves it. She is a part of me. The title is hers. I thank my staff, who are the most wonderful is of the world. And the players deserve it so much. The little piece that is mine, I give it to my wife. What I said to her when I walked into the stands? So much, but for sure I love her.”
For the 50-year-old coach it is the first major prize of his career. “I won a lot of prizes with the youth. And I have actually only been a professional coach for four years. So 1 prize in four years, that’s not bad.”
And what about the rest of the evening? “Gosh, I’m not a good drinker. Two beers and I’m dancing on the table. I think I’ll let the players among them celebrate. They get tomorrow off. I already saw a lot of good dance moves in the dressing room, I can But I heard some of them singing too and I think I’m better at that.”
