AA Gent has secured its ticket for the jump-off matches and is currently also working on the structure for next season. The puzzle is almost complete, but who will take over the crucial positions – CEO Sports, CEO Non-Sports, head coach – is a well-kept secret. It is clear that the Buffaloes would like Wouter Vrancken as successor to Hein Vanhaezebrouck. Owner Sam Baro has Vrancken in high regard.

In terms of profile, this should come as no surprise. Vrancken stands for attacking, attractive football, dares to launch young players and has a history with the Buffaloes. He played for AA Gent from 2004 to 2006 and always enjoyed being there. Moreover, he already has a resume at the highest level: with KV Mechelen he won the cup (against AA Gent), with Genk he only narrowly missed out on the title last season.

The only question is how and when Genk and he will reach a divorce. There has been some noise in the relationship between Wouter Vrancken and part of the Genk club management for some time. A scorching start in the Champions’ Play-offs seemed to clear the air for a moment, until the 10 out of 12 was followed by a painful 0 out of 9, with eleven goals conceded in three games. This brings the divorce one step closer. In any case, it is important for both Vrancken and Genk that clarity is provided quickly.

Buyout clause

The obstacle is his contract. A possible divorce comes with a hefty price tag for the severing party. Eighteen months ago, when Vrancken had been on board for less than six months, the original indefinite-term contract was exchanged for a new agreement. One until mid-2026, which offers both parties more security, but at the same time makes it difficult to separate. A dismissal costs Genk money, leaving Vrancken could cost money.

There is a buyout clause in his contract, but the chance seems rather small that AA Gent wants to cough it up in full. Does AA Gent therefore opt for a different, easier/cheaper solution? Can we be patient until Genk and Vrancken come to an agreement to say goodbye to each other in a painless way?

Wait and see, also because the calendar of the competition slot can make the file a lot more sensitive (and prevent both parties from commenting). As the winner of the Europe Play-offs, AA Gent will contest another barrag match on Sunday, June 2, with a ticket for the second preliminary round of the Conference League at stake. The opponent is the number four or five in the Champions’ Play-offs, depending on who wins the cup. And that opponent could be Genk. A prospect that does not help matters.
