With 15 assists, Cameron Puertas is the absolute assist king of the Jupiler Pro League. Although he seemed to be leaving the club last summer.

25-year-old Cameron Puertas has proven to be invaluable for Union SG. He was crowned the assistant king of the Jupiler Pro League. He helped a teammate score a goal no fewer than fifteen times this season.

However, he did not seem to stay at Union SG after last season. If Karel Geraerts had stayed, he would certainly no longer play for the Brussels team, he said in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad.

Didn’t get a chance

“I don’t think so,” Puertas says. “I had also talked to the club about that, but they asked me to wait until a new coach came. And luckily it came. Blessin came and immediately gave me confidence, allowing me to play with freedom again.”

Geraerts did not give Puertas any chances, it sounds, although the competition, especially with Teuma, was very fierce within the team. And he realizes that too.

“Lazare, Senne Lynen, Teddy: the midfielders all did well. And it worked: we won all the time. Then it is normal that they played. Only sometimes I deserved a chance. Now, I respect those choices and mentally I have also come out stronger.”
