The municipality of Anderlecht has taken a drastic decision: banning alcohol consumption in public spaces.

With this ban, the authorities of Anderlecht want to tackle crime and nuisance on the territory of the municipality.

And what about Anderlecht?

Anyone who violates this new rule will face a fine of up to 350 euros. Bad news for those who consume beer or other alcoholic beverages around the Lotto Park before, during or after a match?

Sarah Frederickx, spokeswoman for the South police zone, was able to provide some reassurance. “You have the letter of the law and you have the spirit,” she begins at Het Laatste Nieuws. “Otherwise there shouldn’t be a terrace anywhere.”

“We are not planning to send a special alcohol brigade or deploy the army. We are not going to spoil the party for the supporters and act rigidly. That is not what the measure is intended to do.”

The rule was introduced solely to limit nuisance. “There are neighborhoods where there were problems, such as Kuregem or Peterbos, and then an alcohol ban is one of the tools in the fight against nuisance and crime.”

“In the past, this was limited to streets or neighborhoods, but people were sometimes very creative and would stand ten meters further, outside the perimeter. That is why the ordinance now covers the entire territory of the municipality,” Frederickx concludes.
