There will be two new films in the universe of it Lord of the rings, with familiar names in front of and behind the camera. The first will be released in 2026.
It was the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, David Zaslav, who announced the news on Thursday. The first film was given the working title Lord of the rings: the hunt for Gollum and will be directed by Andy Serkis, the man who directed the original Lord of the ringstrilogy played the role of Gollum. Serkis will now also take on that role. Peter Jackson, the director of the trilogy, will produce the films.
The Lord of the ringsfilms are based on the books by JRR Tolkien and are set in a fictional world full of elves, dwarves, hobbits and humans. In addition to the three ‘classic’ Lord of the ringsfilms – the first of which was released in 2001 – Peter Jackson also directed three Hobbit-movies. Together, the films form one of the most successful franchises in film history. The films have already grossed almost six billion dollars. The third film of the first triptych, The return of the kingalso won eleven Oscars.
There will also be one later this year Lord of the ringsanimated film, which is the title The war of the Rohirrim got.
