Last year it was announced that Warner Bros. is working on new ‘Lord of the Rings’ films. But the film studio remained tight-lipped about what they would look like or when they would be released.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav changed that today. There will be 2 new films, the first of which will be released in 2026. That film, with the working title ‘The hunt for Gollum’, will not be directed by Peter Jackson but by the actor who plays the role of Gollum plays, Andy Serkis.

Peter Jackson will produce the 2 new films. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who both co-wrote the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films, will also do so this time. The films will not be reworkings of storylines that have already been filmed, but will develop new storylines.

Andy Serkis seems ready to reprise his role. “Yes, Precious”, he hissed in a press release. “It’s time to delve into the unknown once again with my good friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter (Jackson, ed.), Fran (Walsh) and Philippa (Boyens)… It’s just too delicious.
