Optiek Porteman from Ypres received a remarkable customer: Herman Brusselmans. The writer immediately bought not one, but two pairs of glasses. “Who knows, we might appear in his next book,” laughs Jeroen Porteman of Optiek Porteman. He is not the first BV to choose the optician for the latest glasses.
“It is actually a bit of a coincidence that Heman Brusselmans came to us,” says Jeroen Porteman of Porteman optics in Ypres. “Herman has a column in the bird magazine Fwiet by Begijn Le Bleu. That booklet can also be found with us. I once contacted Herman via social media. I once let slip that he is always welcome here if he needs new glasses. And to my surprise he suddenly made an appointment. It’s nice, because we are now somewhat complicit in the makeover that Herman is undergoing. First his long hair came off and now he has new glasses.”
Nervous
“It was a challenge for us to provide an iconic glasses wearer like Brusselmans with a new look. The writer opted for a total package. First we did an eye check. The assembly took place in our studio. Herman opted for a slightly softer, stylish look from the Berlin Mykita. He also bought Oakley Holbrook sunglasses for his motorcycle. We were a bit nervous about receiving the writer, but he turns out to be a very affable and pleasant man. However, I am not completely confident yet, because who knows, we may appear in his next book (laughs).”

Herman came to Ypres with his girlfriend Lena and their son Roman. The writer wore his previous glasses for no less than 15 years. “Maybe he will come here again in 15 years,” jokes Jeroen Porteman. Brusselmans is not the first celebrity to go to the optician for glasses. “Koen De Bouw also came here. He bought the glasses he wears in the TV series ‘Styx’ from us,” says Jeroen. “I cannot deny that it is nice that such people know where to find us. Not only for us, but also for Ypres.”
Cat procession
Optiek Porteman does more business for the city. For example, the manager helps extras in the Cat Parade with a few free monthly lenses and lens solution. Glasses can be very disruptive to historical depictions and often detract from the authenticity of the scene. “Perhaps these people can be helped with contact lenses for a few hours. Because it is important to us that extras have a positive introduction to lenses, we like to do it in this way,” says Jeroen Porteman.
