Russian President Vladimir Putin met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Wednesday. So reports the Kremlin. Tensions between Moscow and Yerevan have been running high lately, with the Armenian Prime Minister increasingly questioning cooperation with Russia.

Armenia and Russia traditionally have close ties, but their relationship has soured since Azerbaijan’s military takeover of the separatist enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023. Until then, the enclave was mainly inhabited by Armenians. Yerevan believes that Russia has done too little to prevent the demarche.

In a video published by the Kremlin on Wednesday, Putin can be seen praising bilateral ties between the two countries. “We always focus first and foremost on economic activity,” said the Russian, who did not say a word about the recent tensions.

Five months ago, Armenia joined the International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC), making it mandatory to arrest Putin if he were to enter Armenian territory. In March last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against the Russian president for his suspected involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children.
