Kim died of old age and the consequences of multiple organ failure, state media report. He will reportedly receive a state funeral. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un already visited the funeral coffin, where he paid his last respects to the former party secretary.

According to North Korean media, Kim Ki-nam “played an outstanding role in creating the monolithic leadership system of the deserving comrade Kim Jong-un.” The current leader is the grandson of Kim Il-sung, the first leader of the Stalinist-ruled country, who died in 1994. He is also the son of Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011. Kim Ki-nam worked for the party headquarters for more than forty years.

According to experts from the website ‘North Korea Leadership Watch’, he had enormous influence on the country’s press, media, visual arts and publishing houses. He also played a leading role in approving or writing essays and slogans. The website is affiliated with the news site ’38 North’ of the Stimson Center in the US, which specializes in North Korea.

The man was infamous in South Korea. There he was compared to the Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.
