The thunderstorms that wreaked havoc in northeastern France on Wednesday evening appear to be heading in the Belgian direction. The RMI has declared code yellow for the province of Antwerp until 2 am on Thursday night. “Large amounts of precipitation are expected,” weatherman Frank Deboosere tells us.
The northeast of France was hit by huge thunderstorms on Wednesday evening. Hailballs as big as golf balls, heavy flooding, mudslides that cost the life of a woman and major damage to farms.

This thunderstorm zone also appears to pass over our province on Thursday. “From 5 to 6 p.m. we can expect about 10 to 20 liters of precipitation per hour for the province of Antwerp and that until a large part of the upcoming night,” says Frank Deboosere. “Once it starts, it will last a long time and may involve thunder and hail.”
According to Deboosere, the reason why the thunderstorm lingers for a long time is “because warm and cold air collides with each other. On that dividing line the showers will be very heavy because the line doesn’t move much, but unfortunately I can’t say the specific street where that will be. The showers will linger there for a long time. Hopefully we won’t get as far as what the weather has done in France.”
