France deploys around 6,000 extra police officers during the arrival of the Olympic flame in Marseille. This was announced by French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

According to the minister, there is no “specific threat”, but various scenarios are being taken into account. The thousands of officers are in addition to the local police and fire brigade. An elite unit, the explosive ordnance disposal service, the water police and an anti-drone team are also deployed to secure the Vieux-Port, the old port of Marseille.

The flame was traditionally lit last Tuesday in Olympia, Greece, the place where the Olympic Games were founded. The Olympic flame is brought to France on a French sailing ship from the nineteenth century. The arrival in Marseille is scheduled for May 8. About 150,000 spectators are expected.
