A great commotion has arisen in Ghana after a high-ranking priest (63) tied the knot with a twelve-year-old girl. Gborbu Wulomo had already chosen his bride when she was barely six years old.

The wedding took place last Saturday in Nungua. Local leaders defended the shocking practice, insisting it was “pure tradition.” “This is the only way to block interest from other men. Outsiders don’t understand our habits,” he said indignantly.

“Under police protection”

Images of the ceremony show Naa Okromo receiving ‘good advice’ from other women. For example, she must “dress seductively for her husband” and use their perfumes “to boost her sex appeal”. She also received tips on how to carry out her household tasks to perfection.

The matter reached such proportions that intervention was required from above. “We have identified and tracked her down,” the Ghanaian police said in a tweet. “The girl and her mother are currently under police protection. We are working with the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs and the Department of Social Affairs to provide her with the necessary support. In the meantime, this matter is being further investigated.”

Under 15 years old

Normally the girl waited for a second ceremony, during which she would be purified and prepared for pregnancy. The legal minimum age for marriage in Ghana is 18 years. The number of child marriages has decreased, but unfortunately still occurs often.

According to the NGO Girls Not Brides, nineteen percent of girls are in such a miserable position. In fact, in five percent of cases they are not even 15 years old when they have to say yes.
