The two drivers of a FlixBus, a Czech man (62) and his Slovak colleague (53), had an argument shortly before the tragic accident near Leipzig yesterday, according to a passenger. German media are now speculating that the driver may have lost control of the steering wheel as a result. Four victims were killed in the accident.

“The two drivers were arguing loudly with each other,” said a passenger. The Czech driver allegedly drove the wrong way shortly after leaving the highway in Berlin. There is speculation in the German press that the argument may have been the cause of the accident in which the driver crashed into a bush and the bus ended up on its side. The accident happened around 9:45 am on the A9 between Wiedemar and Schkeuditzer Kreuz.

“I sat with my youngest son on the left side of the bus, my other two children on the right side. We were all wearing seat belts, maybe that was our luck. Suddenly we were tossed back and forth, and then my eyes went black. When I came to, my son was lying next to me. The other children were tied upside down in their chairs,” says a young mother who wanted to travel to Switzerland with her two sons (4 and 6 years old) and daughter (9 years old).

The number of deaths was adjusted yesterday from five to four. One person is said to be in mortal danger. There were 53 passengers on board. Twenty people were injured.

The exact reason for the accident is currently under investigation. According to FlixBus, the driver who was at the wheel at the time respected all driving and rest times. “Our thoughts are with all the people affected by the accident and their families,” said a spokesperson for the bus company.

German police forces meanwhile announced that an investigation had been launched. The 62-year-old bus driver is charged with manslaughter and unintentional assault and battery. It is currently unclear whether the man could already be questioned.
