Tom Egbers can again make programs for the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. The broadcaster has announced that an agreement has been reached with the presenter after he previously went to court.

According to the NOS, the 66-year-old Egbers will make programs “with a distance from daily sports news”. He focuses on narrative programs and documentaries. He will also provide a number of podcasts for the NOS. The NOS writes in a press release that agreements have been made with the presenter in a “mutually shared desire to move forward” and after “constructive consultation”.

Egbers had been “exempt from work” since March last year after a publication in De Volkskrant. In that article, the newspaper described an affair that Egbers had with a colleague. When his wife found out, the NOS Sport presenter allegedly bullied and intimidated the colleague for a while. In an interview he did not deny that he had called her “the axis of evil”, as the article also stated.

According to Egbers, there were only anonymous reports about his behavior. He further said that he could not defend himself because it was not clear to him what accusation of inappropriate behavior was being made to him.

“Constantly reflected”

Egbers says in a response to the settlement that it is “good to go back to work” after a year “in which a lot has been written, talked about and expressed opinions”. He also says that he has reflected “constantly” over the past year. “Especially on my own role in the culture of the NOS. I find it very sad that there are colleagues who have felt unhappy on the work floor of NOS Sport, in a culture of which I am also a part. I also did not sufficiently realize that in the eyes of younger colleagues I have a position other than just that of ‘a colleague’.”

The programs that Egbers will make will be broadcast in the autumn of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. In order to be able to create those programs, Egbers’ employment contract has been extended until after his retirement.
