In Canada’s Saskatchewan province, 10 people were killed and 18 others injured in several stabbings on the James Smith Cree Nation reservation on Sunday. The suspects are two brothers: Damien Sanderson (31) and Myles Sanderson (30). They fled after the massacre. One of them has since been found dead, the other is still on the run.

It is not yet clear why the two suspects struck so mercilessly. According to police, some victims were chosen at random, but others appear to have been deliberately attacked and stabbed with a knife. Police are refusing to speculate on the motive for now, but Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations chief Bobby Cameron suggested they could be drug-related. Many people from the indigenous community live in the reserve where the stabbings happened. At least 9 of them were killed.

In the meantime, more and more is becoming known about the victims the brothers have made. One of them is Lana Head, mother of two daughters. She had posted on Facebook just hours before that she “has so many good memories to cherish” but was stabbed to death in James Smith Cree Nation.

According to her ex-husband Michael Brett Burns, with whom she still had a good contact, drugs and alcohol were involved: “It is terrible to see how drugs and alcohol can destroy many lives. I was deeply moved by her death,” he says. Many friends and family members have also responded on social media. “She shouldn’t have left the world this way,” writes a childhood friend, for example. Head had two daughters from her marriage to Burns. The woman was divorced but did have a new boyfriend. He too has died.

Earl Burns Sr is a war veteran. He was a community bus driver, confirmed his niece on social media, and was always on hand to help anyone. No one understands why he was just attacked. Burns is said to have been Lana Head’s new boyfriend, but that hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

Also Wes Petterson (77), a friendly widower according to neighbors, was stabbed at his home in Weldon. “Someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly”, say acquaintances. The man’s adult grandson lived in the same house. He hid in the basement and called 911 from there. But Petterson couldn’t help anymore.

In the stabbings, Ivor and Darryl Burns lost their sister; 62-year-old Gloria Burns. She is said to have responded to an emergency call from people in her vicinity, and was killed there. A friend and a 14-year-old boy, perhaps the people she wanted to help, were also stabbed in the same place and did not survive, the woman’s brothers say. “She died as she lived: she was helping people.” (read more below the photos)

Thirteen locations

Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said at a news conference that dead and wounded were found at 13 sites in the James Smith Cree Nation and in the village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon. The eighteen injured have been taken to hospitals in Prince Albert, Nipawin and Melfort, some are still undergoing surgery and are said to be in very serious condition. Police do not rule out the possibility that the death toll will rise further.

A state of emergency is in effect in James Smith Cree Nation, an indigenous community of approximately 2,500 residents. “Do not leave a safe location. Be careful about allowing others into your home,” the Saskatchewan Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) warned people across the area. Numerous checkpoints have been set up and drivers are requested not to pick up hitchhikers.
