European Judo Championships – Duyck, Willems and Carrao die in the second round: “Secretly dreamed of a medal”

--

The second day of the European Judo Championships in Zagreb also produced no Belgian medals. Both Jarne Duyck (-81 kg), Gabriella Willems (-70 kg) and Alessia Carrao (-63 kg) could not get past their opponent in the second round.

A boost after a long injury for Willems

Gabriella Willems (IJF-31) returned to competition for the first time in months after a long knee injury. In the run-up to this European Championship, the Walloon had not been able to train very intensively. So we had to wait and see how she felt on the mat in Zagreb.

In her first round she immediately had to compete against number 11 in the world ranking, the Russian Madina Taimazovo. “I was still tense, even a bit afraid of hurting myself,” Willems said.

This was reflected in a cautious start to the match. After two punishments, our compatriot felt that she had to move up a gear. She attacked more herself and countered her Russian opponent at the perfect moment. A nice ippon and a place in the second round were the result.

I know I have mastered that counter, but I just haven’t been able to train enough after my injury

Gabriella Willems

The Portuguese Joana Crisostomo (IJF-52) seemed like an easier job on paper. Willems had clearly gained confidence and started looking for control and attacking more aggressively. But after a minute of fighting things went wrong. “I know I can do that action, but I just haven’t been able to train enough for it yet,” she explains afterwards. With a good Uchi Mata (hip throw), the Portuguese ended Willems’ European Championship.

“I just haven’t been able to train well enough at the moment. It was nice to feel the atmosphere of a major championship again and I really felt like fighting. Winning a fight is good, but two or three fights was better.” The positive thing is that I have no injuries. There are still competitions to come and I look forward to showing what I can do there.”

Duyck: “I came here for more”

Jarne Duyck wanted to prove that he deserved his place among the top players in the premier class, the category up to 81 kilograms. In his first round the 21-year-old was released, in the second round he competed against the Portuguese Anri Egutidze (IJF-54).

“I knew him from training camp. I knew it would be a tough camp and that his left sleeve was extremely important,” says the silver medalist of the 2023 European U23 Championship.

“Because I am big myself, the opposition is often even stronger than me. My condition is good, so I wanted to make the camp as long as possible.”

I’m making a stupid mistake. This result is a disappointment

Jarne Duyck

Duyck also seemed to succeed. Neither judoka could score and the match had to be decided in the Golden Score. “To avoid a second shido, I try to attack. I landed on my knees and thought the ground fight had already started,” says Duyck.

An incorrect assessment by our compatriot. Despite his kneeling position, the upright fight continued. Something the Portuguese did not miss and earned him a waza-ari.

“I just made a stupid mistake. I wanted to have a good fight today against someone from the top 8 and secretly even dreamed of a medal. Now it ends here. That is a disappointment.”

Young Corrao pays tuition

For Alessia Corrao (IJF-72) it was her first European Championship among the seniors. In the class up to 63 kilograms, the 22-year-old was immediately allowed to go to the second round thanks to the draw. The young Belgian found it difficult to find openings against the Czech Renata Zachova (IJF-22), which also earned her 2 penalties. First for one-sided grip, then for passivity.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Corrao tried to force something on the ground. “In retrospect, perhaps I should have pushed harder. I was perhaps a little too nervous and too focused on the Kumi Kata today,” she says after the camp.

Corrao managed to push the match to the Golden Score, until she got a third shido in those extra times. Again for one-sided grip. “I didn’t know you were being punished for that. But that’s my own fault. I have to know the rules and you can’t do anything about the arbitration.”

“This was my first European Championship and I was a bit too tense. I had higher expectations, so I am left disappointed,” concludes the Walloon.

After two European Championship days, the Belgians are left without a medal. Three more compatriots will be in action tomorrow: Sami Chouchi (-90 kg), Toma Nikiforov (-100 kg) and Vicky Verschaere (-78 kg).

Willems is disappointed after a failed counter

Despite her long injury, Willems still wanted to show more here:

“I want to use a counter that I am used to doing. But I just haven’t been able to train enough. I was a little too tense and was even a bit afraid of injuring myself.”

“Winning a camp is of course good, but two or three victories would have been better. I enjoyed experiencing the atmosphere again at a major championship and am looking forward to showing what I have to offer again.”

Willems also fails in the second round

Willems starts her second camp more aggressively and immediately takes the initiative. She tries to force her Kumi Kata and threatens to sweep her legs. When she tries to launch a counter after a minute of fighting, the Portuguese surprises our compatriot with a strong Uchi Mata (hip throw). Just when Willems wants to forward, her opponent jumps up at the right moment. Ippon is the verdict, just like the elimination at this European Championship.

Alessia Corrao: “Didn’t know I could be punished for that”

Corrao remains frustrated after the first European Championship

We speak to Alessia Corrao when the first emotions have already been digested:

“It was a very long and tactical match and I think my opponent organized it better. I was super focused on the Kumi Kata and that played tricks on me in the end.”

“I should have persevered more on the ground. This was my first European Championship and I was a bit too nervous. I have to arrive here and be free, without stress.”

“I didn’t know that I could be punished for that last action. But that is my own fault. I have to know the rules and you cannot change anything about the arbitration. I came here for more and am still left frustrated.”

I came for a good match against the top 8, but my European Championship ends in round 2 due to a stupid mistake. This is a disappointment”

Jarne Duyck

Duyck: “I made a stupid mistake”

Immediately after his camp we meet a disappointed Jarne Duyck in front of our camera:

“I knew my opponent from a training camp, knew that the match would be tough and that his left sleeve was extremely important. In the beginning I could grab him well, but attacking was difficult,” Duyck himself analyzes.

“I am quite big, which means that the opposition usually has more strength than I do. Conditionally I am strong, so I wanted to make the match as long as possible. Then I make a stupid mistake in the Golden Score and it is of course the end.” story.”

“I wanted to attack so as not to get a second punishment, but my effort wasn’t good enough. I also thought that the ground fight had already started (when the ground fight starts, you can no longer score with a throw), but that wasn’t it case. My opponent follows smartly and still throws me.”

“Of course I dreamed of a podium, but above all I wanted to show that I am worthy of being here. I came here to fight a good battle against the top 8, but it ends in the second round. This result is So it’s a disappointment.”

Corrao also exits

Alessia Corrao also does not get beyond the second round. In her match against the Czech Renata Zachova (IJF-22), she tries to score on the counter, but her wait-and-see attitude earns her a penalty for passivity.

It is difficult to walk upright, she tries to find an opening on the ground. But the Czech closes everything well and when Corrao continues to hold the left collar with both hands for too long, she is punished again for one-sided grip.

Neither lady can score, but after 13 seconds in the Golden Score our compatriot is handed a third and fatal punishment. End of camp and end of European Championship.

Duyck does not survive the first camp

Waiting but concentrated, Jarne Duyck starts his camp against the Portuguese Egutidze (IJF-54). It is a matter of searching for his favorite Kumi Kata (way of gripping), which makes attacking himself difficult at first. When Duyck does try, he walks on a shido for a feint attack.

He threatens to sweep his legs and tries to take control of the camp himself. With a decent attempt at Sumi Gaeshi (sacrifice throw) and good work on the ground, Duyck continues to threaten. After four minutes there is no scoring, so the match is fought in the Golden Score.

Duyck tries to attack further, but after a lesser attempt he ends up on his knees. The Portuguese shifts smartly and throws our compatriot. The waza-ari means the end of Duyck’s European Championship.

Portuguese hurdle in round 2 for Willems

On paper, Gabriella Willems’ next opponent is less sturdy than the first. The Portuguese Joana Crisostomo is number 52 in the world, but has not yet achieved any significant results among the seniors. Willems already met the Portuguese once in 2021 and walked away as the winner.

Willems wins first match!

Gabriella Willems starts her comeback with difficulty. She fights cautiously and leaves the initiative to her Russian opponent. Two penalty points for passivity are the signal to move up a gear. She looks for openings and when Taimazova herself goes for the drop Seoi-Nage (shoulder throw on the knees), our compatriot anticipates well. She throws the Russian on the back with a takeover. Good for a win with Ippon!

No Casse, but Grigalashvili in -81 kg

You probably already knew that the world’s number 1 Matthias Casse is missing out on the European Championships. The other big star in the category up to 81 kilograms is on the mat for the first time this year.

Tato Grigalashvili (IJF-2) is the reigning world champion and the man to beat at this European Championship. It is a matter of guessing his form, because unlike Casse, he has not yet fought a single tournament in 2024.

Last year, the Georgian was beaten in the final by the Turk Albayrak. Grigalashvili will therefore be looking for revenge. Can he add a third European title to his list of achievements?
