After Loes Gunnewijk previously announced the women’s selection for the World Cup, the selection of the elite men has now also been announced by national coach Koos Moerenhout.

Mathieu van der Poel is of course the spearhead for the road race, after which Dylan van Baarle also gets a protected role. The future rider of Jumbo-Visma finished second in Leuven last year behind Julian Alaphilippe.

Koos Moerenhout gave text and explanation about his choices. “Mathieu is a spearhead, but we certainly want to use the strength of the entire team. As far as you can compare a World Cup course with a classic, it is a mix of the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.”

“We have a balanced team on which we can be competitive on all parts of the course. In recent years, the pace at the World Cup has often been high and in combination with approximately four thousand altimeters, this championship will once again be a battle of wear and tear, especially once we have passed the 200 kilometer limit.”

*Shirin van Anrooij also participates in the U23 category, but the UCI has decided in all its ‘wisdom’ that this race will be held in the elite race for women.

National coach Loes Gunnewijk about her selection: “The course of the road race is too tough for the real sprinters with approximately 2,600 vertical meters in total. In the first loop, the riders are presented with the Mount Keira, a climb of 8.5 kilometers. They then drive six times on the Wollongong City Circuit, which includes Mount Pleasant. That is a climb that resembles the Cauberg but is a bit steeper.”

“Annemiek has shown that she can go for the win on both climbing and difficult classic courses. With Marianne we have an asset for the final in which the punchers can come forward more.”

She also deals with the somewhat unusual situation surrounding Shirin van Anrooij. “In the time trial, Shirin can score highly in the U23 category, but in the road race I purely looked at the strongest possible group, which we will definitely need in a race that is expected to be difficult to control.”

Mixed Relay Selection

The Netherlands will start with a top team in the mixed relay. Mathieu van der Poel is part of the men’s team. “That can be a nice last competition stimulus for Mathieu towards the road race.”
