Ajax closes turbulent transfer week with a big win over Cambuur | Eredivisie

Ajax has closed a turbulent transfer week with a big victory over SC Cambuur. On the basis of top scorer Steven Bergwijn, the national champion warmed up for the kick-off in the Champions League and the team from Amsterdam recorded the best competition start since 2002: 4-0.

A year ago, the Leeuwarders barely escaped the double figures (9-0) in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Of the sixteen players who then played for Ajax, nine left this summer. And the club’s most expensive-selling player, Antony, wasn’t even in at the time.

It soon became clear that the transformed Ajax, where Lucas Ocampos and Florian Grillitsch started on the bench this week, would not treat Cambuur to nine goals again. After a restless week, Ajax warmed up with five goals for the CL kick-off against Rangers FC.

Unlike last year, Cambuur coach Henk de Jong had the defensive positions taken. That worked in the first half hour, in which the visitors kept themselves fairly simple in the busy funnel. In fact, in that phase the greatest opportunity was also for Cambuur. Michael Breij shot the ball just over.

Ajax still forced the opening goal in the first half, when Steven Berghuis was found at the back line and his pass in front of the goal was fiddled in by Bergwijn. Five minutes later, the top scorer immediately decided the game, when he decided to give it another try from 25 meters away and fired the ball into the corner, hard and half high: 2-0.

Visor on Wednesday

The visor could therefore be fixed on Wednesday. Trainer Alfred Schreuder replaced Brian Brobbey and Edson Álvarez for Mohammed Kudus and Kenneth Taylor. The latter started on the bench for the first time this season. The replaced Álvarez and substitute Kudus dropped a training session earlier this week due to a wish to leave. There was little sign of disappointment in their game.

Thanks to the substitutes too, Ajax experienced a simple second half. Taylor saw his first attempt via the calf of Devyne Rensch flop into the far corner (3-0) and Kudus was at the end of a nice attack with the same Rensch and another star, Calvin Bassey: 4-0.

The audience in the Arena was not presented with more goals. However, the Ajax fans were introduced for the first time to Lucas Ocampos, who was hired from Sevilla, who was brought in as a replacement for Antony. With the Argentinian, and also the Mexican Jorge Sánchez and Portuguese Francisco Conceição as substitutes, Ajax achieved the maximum score from the first five Eredivisie matches for the first time in twenty years.
