Three Ukrainian power plants severely damaged in “massive” Russian attacks

Russia carried out further missile and drone attacks on the energy infrastructure in Ukraine on Tuesday night. “The enemy is not yet giving up his plans to deprive the Ukrainians of light. A new massive attack on our energy industry,” Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko wrote on Telegram.

The attacks targeted electricity production and power plants in the Poltav, Kirovograd, Zaporizhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia regions, the minister said. According to Ukrainian energy supplier DTEK, three thermal power stations have been severely damaged. “Energy engineers are currently working to eliminate the effects of the attack,” the company wrote on Telegram. According to the company, its installations have already been shelled 180 times since the start of the war in February 2022. There have been five attacks in the past six weeks.

Zelensky: “Don’t give new Nazism a chance”

The various local authorities reported at least six injuries: one in the Dnipropetrovsk region, one in Kirovograd, two in Brovary, near Kiev, and at least two others in the capital. The Ukrainian armed forces reported that air defense systems had been activated in Kiev and the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, among others. According to the air force, Russia fired 55 missiles, 39 of which were said to have been downed. 20 of the 21 drones were also said to have been shot out of the sky.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky notes in a post on X that it is May 8, the day that commemorates the end of the Second World War. He calls Russian President Vladimir Putin a “Nazi” and the attacks “Russian terror.” “The world must not give the new Nazism a chance.” (belga)
