Alexander Blessin immediately ran to the stands on Thursday evening after winning the Belgian Cup with Union Sint-Gillis. After the final whistle, the trainer went to his wife Charlotte. There was an emotional story behind the hug the two gave each other.

Blessin’s wife suffered a stroke last year and is still recovering from it. However, she did not want to miss the cup final. She did not regret her arrival, because Blessins Union won the cup for the first time since 1914. Afterwards, Charlotte Blessin told more about the tough year she experienced.

“It was a particularly tough season for us as a family,” she told Sporza. ‘But we always said we wanted to continue. Because if you give up, everything will be for nothing. Normally I want to go down and celebrate this victory. But Alexander knew it wasn’t easy for me to get there. It is Alexander’s first title. He deserves this.’

The Union coach dedicated the cup to his wife. ‘I will carry that moment in my heart forever. You know, it’s not usual for my wife to come to the game. We had doubts – especially because it is difficult in this stadium. But she deserves this, she’s part of me. This award is for her.’
