“About 50,000 people” have fled Rafah in the past 24 hours

About 50,000 people have left the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip in the past 48 hours. This was reported by an employee of the UN aid organization for Palestinian refugees UNRWA. The Israeli army called for an evacuation on Monday ahead of a major ground offensive. “They are going to Khan Younis, some are going to Al-Mawasi camp a few kilometers away, and others are going to Deir al Balah,” said Scott Anderson of UNRWA.

The Israeli army advises residents to go to the Al-Mawasi camp, but according to Anderson the infrastructure there leaves much to be desired. Moreover, 400,000 people have already fled there. “It’s basically a sandy area, so there’s no sewage infrastructure, no water infrastructure. There are no roads leading to it,” it said.

People who flee to Khan Younis, a city also located in the south of the coastal strip, will end up in an area completely destroyed by the war, Anderson said. He once again emphasized the importance of additional humanitarian assistance in the area.
