The United States has revoked trade licenses that allowed Intel and Qualcomm, among others, to sell laptop and smartphone chips to Huawei. Reuters reports this. This further expands US export restrictions on China.

According to Reuters sources, some companies were informed of the US decision on Tuesday. The licenses of those companies were revoked ‘immediately’ by the US Department of Commerce, according to the news agency. The ministry confirmed to Reuters that it had revoked ‘certain export licenses to Huawei’, but did not specifically name which companies those licenses belonged to. According to Reuters’ sources, it certainly concerns Intel and Qualcomm. Bloomberg news agency endorses this.

“This action will strengthen U.S. national security, protect American ingenuity, and reduce communist China’s ability to advance its technology,” a U.S. congressman said in a statement. Intel supplies processors that Huawei uses in its laptops. Qualcomm supplies, among other things, 4G chips to the Chinese manufacturer.

There have been restrictions on trade between American tech companies and Huawei for years. That was because of former President Donald Trump. He blacklisted Huawei in 2019 for alleged violations of existing sanctions, something Huawei has always denied. A number of tech companies, including Intel and Qualcomm, were allowed to do business with the Chinese tech giant again at the end of 2020.

There was already criticism of the permits, including from AMD. That company felt it was unfair that it was not allowed to supply laptop chips to Huawei, while competitor Intel had permission to do so. The American government previously had plans to scrap that permit, but then decided against it.
