Olav Kooij had to content himself with a place of honor in the past sprint stages, but today it may be three times a charm for Visma’s sprint ace | Lease a Bike. The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia will normally end in a new sprint.

And so Kooij was allowed to tell his story before the start Eurosport. First of all, it was about his own sprint train. “The lead-out of the team, with Christophe Laporte as the last man, certainly gives confidence. Christophe knows perfectly how to position yourself. Today there is a new opportunity.”
“The fact that there is no climb in the final this time may mean that more riders will join the sprint. That will make it a bit more difficult. It is important to enter the city (Lucca, ed.) in a good position.”
The first Giro sprints were won by Tim Merlier and Jonathan Milan. “It is clear that they are currently calling the shots, but perhaps some riders have not yet completed their sprint,” said Kooij. “Every day is different, especially with such a large sprint field. Things are getting better and better after my fall. The recovery is going as expected. I hope things go even better today.”
