Rémi Drussé from Hoogsteder:

At the beginning of May, Hoogsteder – a subsidiary of The Greenery, specialized in the trade of fruit and vegetables on the French market – dives into the tomato season with its three most important products: the Red Egg, the mini Red Egg and the Chica.

These are three products that the company wants to explicitly promote in supermarkets and French wholesalers. “The three references complement each other and each have their strengths. The Red Egg is distinguished from other tomatoes by its very elongated shape and intense red color. The mini Red Egg is very popular in France because it is very sweet. It has a low water content, which ensures a pleasant taste experience and a longer shelf life despite the high Brix value. Chica is top class in the cherry segment with a very high Brix content,” says Rémi Drussé, account manager at Hoogsteder.

After a slow start due to less favorable weather, the Red Egg and the mini Red Egg are now available in large quantities. “We now have the volumes to open the lines at retail and the coloring to satisfy the French consumer. We have the exclusivity on these varieties, which stand out on the shelf due to the visually distinctive packaging that we have designed especially for them You really can’t ignore it in the store!”

Leek prices are going through the roof due to a lack of supply
In addition to tomatoes, Hoogsteder also trades other vegetables such as leeks of Dutch origin. It is currently very popular. “France is struggling with major quality problems in the leek supply. There are problems with bolting, aesthetic irregularities and a poorer shelf life. The situation is also not ideal in the Netherlands, but we are fortunate to have better weather, which leads to better quality. Deliveries are guaranteed. However, given the high demand and limited availability, prices will of course rise.”
