Flemish people who have solar panels and a digital meter no longer benefit from the reversing counter system after a ruling by the Constitutional Court. They may receive compensation for the excess power production that they inject into the grid. The amounts awarded vary widely. Mijnenergie.be delved into the figures and bundled them in an overview of ‘injection rates 2024’.

The Constitutional Court has annulled the regulation regarding the reversing counter. Whether the total picture gives you a higher or lower bill depends largely on your consumption habits. If you mainly use electricity when the sun is shining, this speaks in favor of the new tariff methodology. This also appears from our overview of injection rates for 2024.

What is injection rate?

The injection rate or feed-in payment is the financial compensation that you receive from your energy supplier for the electricity that your solar panels produce, but which you cannot immediately use yourself. You supply that ‘extra’ electricity to the power grid and receive a rate for this from your energy supplier.

It is always worthwhile to compare energy suppliers. Choose the best contract depending on your injection and consumption.

Overview of injection rates 2024

It is important to know that you may also receive compensation for the electricity that you do not immediately consume, but inject into the grid. The energy supplier decides whether to grant compensation and what amount. He is therefore not obliged to do so. We bundle the injection rates of the various energy suppliers in the overview below, which we supplement monthly with the current amounts.

To give you an idea: if you generate 3,500 kWh of electricity per year, of which 2,000 kWh you do not immediately use, you inject 2,000 kWh into the power grid. To know what compensation you will receive from your supplier, the following calculation suffices:

2,000 kWh x the injection rate from the table below/100

Which comparison method do you use best?

With a variable injection rate, the amount granted is indexed based on an indexation parameter per month or per quarter (for example: Belpex). To compare injection rates, we recommend the first table, according to the method of future values on the futures market. The energy regulators and energy suppliers follow the same methodology to compare injection rates. The second table is based on the last known values of each index. It allows you to estimate the amount of your injection rate.

Most suppliers only make the injection rate available to customers who have also concluded an energy purchase contract with them. Engie also opens the injection rate to non-customers, provided they pay a fixed fee.

What for those who do not have a digital meter?

For those who do not yet have a digital meter, the reversing counter system will remain in force for the time being. Fluvius initially planned the installation of the digital meter by the end of 2023 for everyone who installed solar panels before July 1, 2019. In the meantime, the Flemish government offers the option to postpone the rollout of the digital meter for solar panel owners until early 2025.

How to compare with injection rates 2024?

The energy comparator of Mijnenergie.be takes the injection rates into account. If you have a digital meter and solar panels, you will have the option to enter your injection (day/night depending on your type of meter).
