Participation in the play-offs is one step closer for NAC. On Sunday, Jean-Paul van Gastel’s team won against Jong PSV without playing big: 2-0. The gap with the competitors is increasing, with two matches to go.

After weeks of doom and gloom, NAC saw its competitors for the last play-off tickets also stumble. So by winning against Jong PSV, a nice step has been taken towards participation in the play-offs. It wasn’t all that heartwarming Yellow Army was presented, but the points count.

Jean-Paul van Gastel had caused quite a surprise with his line-up by passing two trendsetters. There was no room for the creative Aimé Omgba after a number of bad weeks. Matthew Garbett also lost his place. Two players who could potentially carry the team: Van Gastel did not need them.

Boy Kemper was allowed to start again, but that was at the expense of Manel Royo. Right back Boyd Lucassen suddenly became a right midfielder, which meant that Martin Koscelník was brought in. The team was quite mixed up after the 2-2 in Den Bosch.

Easy NAC

It was the Slovakian right back who provided the liberation in the first half. After 26 leisurely minutes, he headed a corner from his buddy Dominik Janosek against the ropes. His fourth goal again. More than, for example, striker Elías Már Ómarsson. Before that, Janosek had already ruined a gigantic opportunity: face to face with the goalkeeper, he shot wide.

After an hour, when Jong PSV started to get stronger and the 1-1 was in the air, Van Gastel intervened. Omgba was allowed to relieve Tom Boere and Royo replaced Kemper. Ten minutes later Garbett was also allowed to come on and it was time for a debutant. Defender Cherrion Valerius made his first minutes in the first.

Omgba scores

The game went back and forth in the last half hour, with dangerous breakouts from Jong PSV and a hard shot from Casper Staring that went over. But Jan Van den Bergh, who regularly saved the day at the back, also played a leading role at the front. Together with substitute Omgba, he set up the attack and it was the talented talent who scored the redeeming 2-0 ten minutes before the end. His fifth goal of the season. That was the loot. With the three points, NAC takes a big step towards participation in the play-offs. The gap with MVV, now ninth, is four points.

NAC line-up: From the Merbel; Koscelnik (69. Valerius), Martina, Van den Bergh, Kemper (59. Royo); Lucassen, Staring, Oldrup Jensen (69. Garbett), Janosek; Ómarsson, Boere (59. Omgba)
