A serious fire raged in a complex with social apartments in the Verbueckenstraat in Geel on Wednesday around noon. It originated in a home on the top floor under the roof. According to mayor Vera Celis, at least six apartments are uninhabitable.
“The fire quickly spread through the roof to apartments,” says spokesperson Kristof Geens of the Kempen fire zone. “The top floor burned completely, but at a certain point we were able to stop the progress of the fire.”
The residential block was completely evacuated and a resident was rescued from the home where the fire started by the fire brigade. “She was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was not actually injured.”
According to Mayor Vera Celis (N-VA), at least six apartments are uninhabitable. “We are now trying to arrange shelter for them together with social housing company LeefGoed.” The fire was accompanied by a large plume of smoke.
The fire brigade called in BeAlert to appeal to keep windows and doors closed.
